As this mission covers a large area, most of the time the control and the drone are without communication.

Would there have to be a connection between the driver and the drone to be able to take photos?

Make sure you use the Connectionless setting:

It makes it so the aircraft does the triggering instead of the app. The tradeoff is that the images are then collected at various speeds which can affect the accuracy of the results but it is better than missing images.
