Still having blurry out of focus images

Hi-

I've written before and I know you swear nothings different in terms of focus between the old map pilot and the map pilot pro, but there has to be. We consistently get bad photos since moving to the pro version. Some flights are good, some are bad and there seems to be no way to know what we are going to get from flight to flight. We started using Pix4Ds app which works without fail however Map Pilot Pro app is really the best one out there and I want to try to figure this out.

Yesterday we flew 7 short missions of about 36 photos. Same area, same altitude, all automatic settings.  After each mission we downloaded the photos, looked at them and flew again. The first mission was all bad photos. The next six missions were fine. The first mission had no warnings. The next six all had a "Detected Camera Mismatch" warning, which I had not seen before however one of the other pilots had. The options were Skip or Update. We selected "update" each time... The message details were that the app detected the P4P Camera and does not match the Mavic Pro camera used to save the mission.

The original mission was planned using the P4P/Adv/RTK/X4S camera. When the message appeared on the second mission test, I created a new mission of the exact same area ensuring that we had selected the proper camera. Each of the six following attempts we continued to get the same warning message and we selected "update". The photos were fine.

I think we are getting to the heart of the issue, but I want to know why the app thinks we are using the Mavic Pro camera for planning when the P4P camera is selected in the settings? We always pre-plan the missions. I'll do more testing, but so far, my thought is when we don't have any warnings the pictures are crap. When we do get a warning, the pictures turn out good.

Your expert help to resolve this issue would be appreciated. Thanks!

Update 10-31-23:

None of the app updates to date have solved our issues. I noticed that another user has the same focus issues along with the "camera mismatch" and the "radius" error. Our work around for quite some time is that for every single time the drone takes off we have to manual focus. We do this once the drone reaches altitude and starts to travel to first waypoint. We pause the drone, let it settle and double-tap the camera view. A quick "focus success" displays in the upper right hand corner of the screen. If you forget to do this each time during multi-battery missions, you have an entire battery worth of blurry photos. We also have the camera mismatch error come up every time we pre-program in the office and then go fly in the field. We overcome this by selecting "update" from the warning box. The only work-around we found for the maximum radius error, which plagues us during every multi-battery mission is to force close the app and restart it. Luckily the abandonment point is robust enough to survive the force closure of the app. I don't think any of these issues are related to the DJI software, hardware or settings because we've double, triple and quadruple checked them all every flight. I think there are some MapPilot Pro issues that are obviously hard to find since they persist through each app update. I hope this helps other users with work arounds until these issues are finally resolved.

We have been tearing into what could be causing focus issues and aside from the things caused by actual problems (motion in the takeoff area or featurelessness) we have identified cases where the aircraft might still be in motion during the initial Auto Focus process. Not good. This will be addressed in the next release.

In the meantime, to make sure things work well for you get in the habit of stopping the flight and double tapping something contrast-rich in the camera preview. This will trigger a new AF solution. There will be a "Focus Success" message when this happens. This is only available when the aircraft is traveling 0 m/s.

There was a mismatch issue that was something related to the Mavic Pro and was addressed in version 5.4.8. Otherwise you will get that error when you save a mission for a P4P and then connect a different aircraft. 'Update' will update it for the connected aircraft. 'Skip' will just fly what is programmed which might result in more or less overlap than anticipated.

When preplanning missions you need to have the aircraft you plan on flying it with selected in the settings if you are not connected to the aircraft so Map Pilot Pro can detect it.

The mission that I have put as an example of blur consists of a single battery. the problem does not occur at the start of the mission, the first photos are correct, the problem occurs in the middle of the mission and coincides when the camera view is switched to full screen. I can send you the original photos. the drone is a phantom 4 advance

It looks like the terrain is pretty flat so it shouldn't need different values. I highly doubt the switching of the camera view and the map preview do anything to the camera settings. If you really do believe that to be the case please send the 5 images before the switch and the 5 images taken after the switch so we can see the differences in focus and the tags.

Hi Zane,

btw I am still getting the "Detected Camera Mismatch" warning although I am on 5.8.4 and I created the mission in the same version. For some reason the app thinks I created the mission using Mavic 2 Pro camera and I have always used Phantom 4 Adv/Pro in the settings.

Please check this annoying bug!

I have been getting the Camera Mismatch error  for a while now (maybe 6months) had it today everytime I reboot the app after landing (thats another issue 'Max radius'). My app settings are P4P always have been as they are the only DJI I fly.

I am on v5.5.7

I also think my images are less sharp than they used to be. I have been flying the same site for over 7yrs with P4P.

Cheers

Troy: Have you created a new mission plan your are you using a new one? Please verify what camera you have selected in the settings and send a screenshot of your settings and the .mme mission file to mapping@dronesmadeeasy.com so we can take a look at it.

For the max radius check the settings in the DJI app to make sure you don't have one set.

For the focus there are a lot of things that could affect that. The biggest is motion and feature richness in the takeoff area. If the Automatic Focus value that is pulled at the top of the climb is not good enough feel free to stop and redo it.

From https://support.dronesmadeeasy.com/hc/en-us/articles/4401958968468-Camera-and-Gimbal-Controls

"At the top of the climb to the flight height an autofocus solution is pulled after the aircraft settles using the standard on-camera DJI autofocus using the center of the camera preview area. This process is done for every flight. This is the default setting. If there is motion occurring in the area the autofocus solution is pulled from it can cause out of focus images. If you are ever questioning your focal quality you can stop the flight and double tap on a contrasty spot in the camera preview screen to force the auto focus to pull another solution. "
