Saved mission load: constant flickering of base map tiles

iOS11.2.1

MP 2.7.1

iPad Pro 10.5

I have seen this reported many times in various Facebook groups and forums and just assumed it was reported here, but can’t see it looking back through previous posts.

When a saved mission is loaded the cached basemap tiles all are flicking like mad continuously. If map is resized or moved slightly a couple of times a sweet spot can be found where it doesn’t flicker. If moved/ resized again it starts flickering again. If I have 4G on my phone and share the WiFi to the iPad in the field and reload the base map from the bottom left icon fly out it loads tiles fine and becomes stable. Don’t always have 4G in the field though.

Not sure if this is an iOS version problem or something that can be addressed by yourselves.

Please refer to the following topic:

This is a CPU/GPU issue, not an internet connection speed issue.

When you have a data connection you are switching to the normal Apple Maps basemap and you are not operating from the saved tiles anymore. This is a fine workaround. The parallel display of the saved tiles has been adversely affected by the recently announced device slow downs to address battery issues: http://money.cnn.com/2017/12/21/technology/apple-slows-down-old-iphones/index.html

We do not monitor or take part in any Facebook group discussions. All questions and posts made here on our official support channel are responded to quickly. As with all topics, we highly recommend getting your information from the source, rather than Facebook.

As a professional drone pilot I really need mapping software to work. Map Pilot has been the best overall in my opinion but flakey cop-out answers like this does not help your reputation.

So if its a CPU/GPU issue and the solution stated in that post was are you saying I need a more powerful iPad? I have an iPad Pro! What am I to do!

It is kinda stating the obvious that when I switch to apple basemaps over 4G in the field I'm not using saved tiles anymore!

You also try and put forward the argument that it is Apples battery slowdown contributing to the problem. An iPad Pro is not affected by this forced slowdown - a pretty lame arguement to be honest.

I am not asking or expect you to monitor facebook groups/forums. I was merely saying that others have reported the same problem. I even had PM's from other certified users that are experiencing the same problem. I was just expressing a little surprise that no one else has reported it to this forum although several colleagues told me they had emailed support on the problem. My information was from the source...myself and others who had the same problem!

Your last paragraph was downright condescending. But lets move on. we need collaboration with determined resolve to stick to the problem I and other professional mappers have been having.

So lets get back to the problem as no real solution has been offered by those other links so far. A few points...

1. Using an iPad Pro - not a lot of options for a faster machine there!

2. All other apps are always closed as a matter of procedure before running Map Pilot.

3. The problem happens also when not connected to the aircraft. Connecting to the aircraft would draw more resources so this is happening without aircraft connected and therefore less resources in use.

I can reduce load on the CPU (as you suggested) but attempts so far has not cured the problem.

Is MME working on a fix for this problem? As as a user I cant do much more, but open to your suggestions.

How do I get my money back?  I bought the full version yesterday, only to discover the flicking issue (and it’s crashed once); so I’m not really going to trust this to control my 2 week old $1200 drone.  I’m using an IPad Pro 9.7.  Not the latest, but not ancient.  If this program only works on the latest version (although that seems questionable from some of the comments), why is there not a huge warning in the iTunes Store to that effect?  Why is it even still available if it doesn’t run on most platforms?  I haven’t seen any posts that you plan to fix this issue, just ones telling people they need to upgrade their hardware.  I did my research and this looked like the best software package, but if I need to buy another IPad just try it, I think I’ll try another platform first.

If you wish to get a refund you need to contact Apple to get a refund since the purchase was made from them. We can't fix what they have done to their devices and can only try to adapt to it. The bottom line is the cached basemap feature won't work on degraded hardware so either a new battery or a new device is needed. Aside from the cached basemap feature, everything else works fine. If these issues persist we may have to remove that feature all together to keep people from getting upset about it not working perfectly.

We are working on a fix for this issue but the way they slowed the iOS devices down cuts down on the number of parallel processes that can be run and the libraries we are using for showing the cached maps is highly parallel. This is why the issue showed up after the iOS 11 update and is not present on newer devices. I have personally watched 3 devices working older devices get updated and no longer work afterwards. We have an iPad Mini 2 that runs fine.

An iPad Pro 9.7 does have an older processor and has also been affected by the parallel processing limitations once the battery reaches a certain level of degradation.

Zane, how can you justify using the Apple slowdown on older devices as a reason for this problem when I am experiecing this flickering on an iPad Pro.i get that iOS updates can move goal posts but we have a serious situation where perfectly good software is now no longer fit for purpose.

I was glad to hear you are working on a solution., meanwhile I can't use this software for the purposes MME states in the app description.

Read about other devices being slowed down too. We have a bunch of "new" devices (up to A10 processor) that are not on the "affected devices" list that run significantly slower since the iOS 11 update. Sometimes there are things that can be done to fix it and sometimes there aren't.

You can read more about measures to speed things up here:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-10344

Map Pilot gets more new features, not to mention more maintenance and support, than any other app out there. We fully agree that your device should probably be working but there are all sorts of variables with these things that we can't control. Short of having the latest and greatest devices all the time, expect that things will degrade over time.

Again, if you wish to get a refund you need to contact Apple to get a refund since the purchase was made from them.

You guys have convinced me to stay on ios 10.3 with my ipad air2.  It's main job is uas control so no need to update for me so long as 11 is not a requirement.
