Drones Made Easy problems on first mission

Tried running a mission today with Drones Made Easy for the first time... Used it instead of Drone Deploy, but the mission failed.... So I have a a couple quesitons...

First, after an automatic drone-initiated return to home (the Drones made easy software wildly underestimated the battery life for the first leg of the mission) I couldn't get the software to re-enter the mission... I gather from the documentation that you are supposed to manually launch the drone after you change batteries, and the drone should fly back to the abandonment point... This didn't happen.... Its really not clear in the get started instructions what to do with multiple battery missions...

And to manually launch the drone you have to have the DJI go app running...

I have read other posts where someone asks about the DJI Go app.. should you close it or can you leave it on in the background... Haven't found an answer to this one because the documentation says different things in different places... So, please, do I close the DJI app or not?

What can you do if the mission doesn't pick up after you change the battery and manually launch?  Must you manually launch then close the DJI Go app?

There must be something simple I am missing in the documentation, but I'd be grateful for help... I don't want to pay the drone deploy subscription rates, but I also haven't had this problem with drone deploy....

Thanks.

Map Pilot does not handle the estimates for the aircraft returning home, the battery does. If it is coming home early that means you likely need to perform a battery calibration so it knows how much charge it has left.

Please let us know where it says to manually launch the aircraft after a battery change so we can change it. Map Pilot will only allow the aircraft to start flying from the ground.

After doing an initial checkout at a location, fully close DJI Go. NEVER fly with DJI Go in the background unless you like having your aircraft be a few miles away in an unknown location.

Hi Zane, thanks for the message..... The battery was calibrated and the drone did a RTH due to voltage, and there wasn't a problem with the battery... First issue was that DME set up the flight plan for two batteries, and the drone returned to home for low voltage FAR before the DME estimate (which in itself is not a big deal, but I have to remember that its estimates are low.. For this mission I need to have four batteries waiting just in case, three minimum, even though DME said 2)....The drone landed, and I changed the battery, turned the drone back on, clicked the confirmation on the screen and nothing happened.... The drone did not relaunch to go back to the abandonment point...  This was super frustrating, and embarrassing, because I had a client on site with me, and I could not get the drone to launch.... (By the way I would not normally have a client there when I am using a program for the first time... It was unexpected... ) But I had no idea what to do, and ended up cancelling the mission, and didn't have time to charge extra batteries and re-fly....

DJI Go was not closed, but running in the background... So I tried to manually launch due to a post in your help section, where it seems to say you should manually take off, as follows:

The battery estimate issue is not huge (though I wish it was a little closer), but I'll get used to that... BUT the not returning to the mission is huge...

So... It sounds like you would not expect the program to NOT initiate a return to the mission after a battery change... Perhaps that I had the DJI Go app still open in the background caused the problem?

In the instructions closing the DJI app is mentioned once, but in comments I have seen others say it can be running in the background in case you need to take control of the drone.... So I am glad to know that I should NEVER fly with the DJI Go app open...

Main important questions:

1) If this happens again, is there anything I can do to trigger the return to the mission in the software, without restarting the entire mission?

2) If I need to take manual control of the drone during a mission, and the DJI Go app is not running, can I do so and fly the drone within DME? The is important because there are places that I fly where helicopters MAY be flying low, so I have to keep vigilant and might have to take over during a mapping mission... So I just need to make sure I can take over and control the drone if need be without having to first open the DJI Go app...

I really need to know the above before re-scheduling my shoot, so thanks in advance...

On another note, the reason I am trying DME and MME is that I am dissatisfied with the capture resolution of Drone Delploy at the $150 per month fee... But I still want to be able to offer such aerial imaging... The DME did caputure images from the first part of the flight, and I am VERY happy with the resolution of the images.... Excepting these first couple of glitches I think I will be happy with your software... B

Best,

Michael

Map Pilot will recall the aircraft automatically in only one instance: flight time expiration. This is set in the options menu.

Any other automated return to home event is controlled by the smart battery. Map Pilot does not monitor the raw voltage for any of these decisions since it is left up to the battery.

A properly calibrated battery is one that is run down to 6 or 7% of the battery and then charged on the DJI single charger. If you haven't done this in the last 20 charge cycles your battery is not calibrated.

After pressing the 'Battery Changed' confirmation button you have to upload the waypoints again and press Start just as you did before. This time though it will start at the blue abandonment point that was left where the battery turned for home.

DJI Go running in the background will catch some of the events that Map Pilot needs and is likely the source of some of the issues.

The wording in that article was weird and has been adjusted. It is funny that those 4 words threw you off but there are probably 100 places where we say not to fly with DJI Go running in the background...

If for some reason the blue verification line does not take the route you think it should you can use the Manual Restarting Point feature to restart the flight wherever you want:

https://support.dronesmadeeasy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005940746-Manual-Restarting-Point

You can always fly the aircraft without any app running but if you have Map Pilot open and you switch out of the programmed flight mode on your remote it will drop an abandonment point so you can come back to that spot and pilot the aircraft freely while still seeing what is going on.
