Yes, the GeoTiff DEM is in meters ASL. There are no units for the COLOR.tif. It is a picture that shows the terrain shape with shading. There are no useful units in there.
The xxx-DEM.tif output files seem to have units of meters asl (correct?), but what are the units and values of the xxx-COLOR.tif files? They have a broader range and start at 0.

Thanks for the quick reply. Still confused though, as the color scale on COLOR.tif definitely correlates with elevation, though I do see some shading in there too. (This was generated in 2018, if that makes any difference.)
There are 3 bands for 3 colors: Red, Green, and Blue. I could see how one color fading into another to form a gradient in colors might look like it tracks but it is not an elevation value.
I see, thanks. The color version looks to be much higher resolution than the DEM. Is the DEM smoothed?
