Negative Volume calculations on bunkered stockpiles

A couple of the material stockpiles (see image) I'm measuring are coming up as negative values, I've tried anything from 4 points to 20 and its still coming up as a hole in the ground!! All the others seem to be ok, although the void volume might be out for the 4th one up from the bottom, even though the marked area looks to be full its coming up with 151m3 volume and 146m3 for the void?

Any ideas?

Those are not really stock PILES. This is stock in a bin. Our measurement system is based on measuring volume above a defined plane. The plane is defined by the placement of the polygon points. With traditional stockpiles the they rest on flat ground so when you define the polygon around it to measure it you are defining the ground plane. With what you are attempting you are defining the plane at the top of the bins so you are getting negative values.

This is kind of a weird way to do it but you could draw 4 points for each bin. But the 2 of the points would be out the back of the bin on the other side of the wall and the other 2 out the front. Try not to include the side walls. Then the measurement would be accurate except for the back wall would be included. That could easily be subtracted out though since it is a known volume.

However, if that back side of that bin is a hill and not at the same level as the front of the bin that wouldn't work.

Ahh i see, thanks Zane. I thought that it looked for the lowest point and used that for the ground plane and then used all the points to define the area which in turn calculated the volume.

Is there anyway that a simple tick box could be added to enable this type of calculation ?

Here's another example of one of our stockpiles, as you can see its not fully surrounded by flat ground but has trees, buildings and other equipment that would skew the calculation.

We are unlikely to add a mode like that. Aside from this fairly specific case where it would give a better answer it would be super unreliable in other cases.
