.Las files

Is there a reason why I cannot download the .Las point cloud file?

We don't and have never actually offered a .las file as an output. We offer an OBJ file which can readily be converted into a .las file using free software such as MeshLab.

The OBJ file contains a surface mesh... which is a simplification of the raw point cloud produced by the processing. 

A point cloud with color points is particularly useful for survey purposes and advanced modelling.

Is there no way we can get this from MapsMadeEasy??

There is currently no LAS file available.

The OBJ file is accompanied by a MTL and JPG file which align the full color image with the model. This gives all the information available. If you need to reduce the data down to just the points you can use 3DSMax or Blender to open it and save it as a LAS or XYZRGB file. LAStools or PCL also look like good options for converting to what you are looking for. Since the OBJ is not georeferenced any derived output won't be either.

We will be releasing our new export types in January.

Hi Zane, Thanks for the feedback.

The obj model is still just a surface model. My interest is in the actual 3D point cloud that is generated prior to simplification.

I look forward to the new formats in Jan... hopefully this will be included. Until then I will need to use your competitors products on jobs where raw point cloud information is required.

LAS and XYZ RGB files are now available by default on all georeferenced jobs.

When I use las viewers such as Fugroviewer or PointCloudvis, the .las files are displayed in a straight line instead of an area point cloud. Any suggestions about a suitable viewer or how to 'adjust' so that the data are displayed properly?

Make sure your scaling is correct. Since the point clouds are georeferenced they are in degrees x degrees x meters.
