Photogrammetry and Licensing

I'm watching a discussion on another board where licensed surveyors are trying to make the point that in some states, making these maps would be considered the work of a surveyor and if not licensed, there could be fines, etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone has run into that or if there are ways around it or if these surveyors are just trying to protect their turf.

They way I see it, we are just providing an image and the client is making his own measurements.

Creating an image is certainly not illegal. But if you are not properly authorized to certify the accuracy of a measurement you are getting paid to do then there may be a problem. As long as the map creator isn't overselling the data or saying that it is surveyed it shouldn't be an issue.

That being said, there is a lot of "turf protection" going on...

I'm in Washington State and have had a discussion with a surveyor who is on the state board of surveyors and he gave me copies of state law that in a nutshell says that is is illegal to even mention "mapping" as a service unless you are licensed as a surveyor whether or not you make it clear to your clientele that your are not providing survey grade products.

I advise you to investigate your state's laws and go from there.

So as far as Washington is concerned, how do you present your service in a way that's legal?
