mapping in rugged terrain?

I am trying to map portions of the Escondido Creek area in northern San Diego County -to get a "before" image before whatever rains may come this winter with El Nino, both to the creek and some of the trails in the Elfin Forest Recreational area. Here are some of my initial surveys: https://www.mapsmadeeasy.com/locations/detail/2eb3cee9f8ad42e9b5fc1920fc44c0ef/

The creek runs through some hills that are 800 feet high. This makes is challenging to map the trails on the higher elevations as they descend to the creek level. It also makes it challenging to define a survey flight plan from creek level that doesn't fly into the hills on either side.

Is there any way that I could get feedback from my IOS app when I enter a flight plan to show me the actual height above the features I am mapping? I'd like to know whether I would fly into the side of a hill, or don't give a hill enough clearance to get clean imaging data.

We are working on adding terrain awareness but that won't be available for a while.

In the meantime, when mapping in uneven terrain, it is always best to start as high as possible. If you can start near the high point in your survey area you can set the overlap at 60-70%. Since the terrain is falling away from you, the overlap will be much higher in the lower areas.

If you must start at the bottom, you might want to map the higher portions at a much higher overlap settings since the actual overlap will decrease as the terrain climbs up towards the aircraft's cruising altitude.

This is also a problem for me. Working in NZ where most jobs have terrain challenges. It would be great if missions could follow ground surface rather than a constant height above launch.

We are working on trying to get terrain awareness released as part of the app but DJI keeps updating things and that eats a lot of developer time... There are a lot of things to account for in order to make it so people aren't losing their aircraft.
