Tower Measurement

Hello,

Is it possible to accurately measure the diameter of the top of a tower 160' high? How might I go about this?

Thanks for the help!

That is an interesting problem. It kind of depends on what tower it is. You would need to map the surrounding area, maybe 100ft or so out from the tower to make sure the model will be stable and then manually go up and take 20 or so pictures of the top of the tower from 40-50 ft above it, all in the SAME FLIGHT. The images of the surrounding area should be pointing straight down. The images of the top should be with the gimbal tipped up 20-30 degrees. This won't render the sides super well but it will give a good detail of the top which is what you care about.

It's my first attempt at mapping something and I've been unsure of how to go about it. The part confusing me the most was what would be used as reference for measurement being nothing else is on that plane. It's starting to click a little now after reading your reply. So the software will use the altimeter in its calculation of measurement? I need to give accurate measurements to a construction company looking to preserve a historic building. Thanks a lot for the input, I'll give it a try.

If it is your first map try to do something a little easier first. Just do a flat area so you can learn how it all works. Use an app to make sure you get regular overlap. Then you can start messing with harder tasks.
