Not Taking Photos on a Mission

Hi there,

Yesterday I had my first try with the APP and my DJI Phantom 3 Standard. On the First Run it took only 7 Photos at the start and then stopped taking pictures. However the Drone carried on it's flight path. I assumed it might be because of loss of connection from controller or weak connection so for the 2nd run I made sure to do it from a vantage point with a good view.

On the 2nd run the APP showed correct image intervals and then later the intervals reduced a lot. However the dots were correct but the pull out tab at the right showed that the 180 or so images were taken, when the dots on the map were a lot less. After I got the card out there were only 56 images.

I made a map and A it's missing a lot and B some parts of the map are really messed up

It sounds like you are having some pretty significant signal strength problems. That is the biggest drawback for using the Phantom 3 Standard for mapping. The 500m range is the best case scenario and in any sort of environment where there is any interference you will start to experience the issues you are describing.

Your best bet is to start in the middle of the are to survey in order to keep most of it within range. Once that signal strength starts dropping it will get bad quickly. This is why we recommend one of the better equipped models for any serious mapping.

Ryan thanks for the reply. Would it in that case be an idea to split the area in to 2-3 Mapping zones and then use all the images to create the image?

Also my 2nd question in the post. Why does some parts of the map once created come up totally blurred and squiggly, when the original pictures are just fine.

Yes. You could certainly break it up into multiple jobs. It can be pretty hard to guess what kind of range you will get in any area though.

Once you get more overlap things will come out more clearly.

Please read the following information on overlap related image errors:

We don't use the raw imagery and stitch it together. We use the imagery to create a 3D model of the scene and then texture it with the imagery so if there isn't enough overlap, the model will be bad and everything goes downhill from there.
