Collecting better 3D using Map Pilot

So Tudor when we are submitting a job with obliques (which doesn't conform to the guidelines, do we just submit anyway?

Basically the full 3D processing requires the non-nadir images to come out better and it is assumed that people doing so will know what they are doing. The Data Collection page does mention this caveat.

if we're doing a 2.5D job, ALL images MUST be NADIR and we CAN use the Map Pilot app.

if we're doing a 3D job, ALL images MUST be OBLIQUE and we CAN'T use Map Pilot.

Not necessarily... You can fly any project with stereo photogrammetry specs and produce a Z, and/or depth data.  -Karl

I realize that. I believe this is how MME does a 2.5D job. All the images are nadir but because of the overlap, some 3D data can be calculated. However, MME specifically state that for full 3D model with overhangs,etc. they need oblique images.

My question was can Map Pilot be used to collect oblique imagery to allow 3D processing using the MapsMadeEasy data collection recommendations?

If so, how?

You can use Map Pilot to collect somewhat oblique images by manually adjusting the angle of the gimbal up 35-40 degrees or so. This will make it so there is more detail collected of vertical features. The detail will still be limited though due to the fixed elevation and vantage point. Overhanging roofs will not be rendered accurately for example. Using Map Pilot will allow for more overhanging detail, like under trees, but will not accurate reproduce a building with overhanging features for example.

To be able to accurately render these types of features you can use Map Pilot to get a good overview of the general area and then manually fly to fill in the vertical detail areas you need. Due to the lower to ground nature of these images there is no safe way to automate it into an app.
