If you are purchasing a new devices we would highly recommend getting something with a little more horsepower. DJI has recently started adding a lot of background logging to the software we use to communicate with the aircraft and takes up a lot of CPU. We are leaning towards the iPad mini 4 these days.

I've been experiencing some MME issues with my ipad 2 mini - I simply don't think it's fast enough for this app to work reliably.  Moving to a faster iPad Air 2 device stopped the app randomly hanging/crashing.
