Terrain Awareness with Inspire 2

1 - Why did the Inspire2 not follow terrain from one flight line to another all on the same battery? It seems to follow terrain on the uphill flight line, but on the downhill flight line, it stays at higher altitude.

2 - Similarly on the downhill flightline, the Inspire2 was flying at 1 mph. I changed the setting to not slow down to reduce motion blur, and it was still flying 1mph during seemingly random points along the flights. I turned off obstacle avoidance and the same thing happened. I cleaned off all the sensors and turned on obstacle avoidance and the same thing happened. Max speed (17mph) was set based on overlap of 90%.

This made it so I could not use my equipment at all for the flights because it would drain an entire battery and only fly two flight lines. Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

1. Was it windy? If there was a wind going into the hill it might push it into the hill a bit when going up (dangerous!) and have trouble getting down into the wind on the way down. If the wind was oriented like this you might want to map across the hill instead of up and down it. We actually recommend that all the time. It goes faster.

It is hard to tell from the images but it looks like there was still terrain changes happening. It is possible that was linear section of the flight plan if the terrain was linearly rising it may have just been between 2 waypoints. Remember that we simplify the contour to plus or minus 5% of the flight height to ration waypoints.

If it wasn't windy I don't really know... We give the aircraft the waypoints and it flies it. It might be more sluggish doing elevation change on the way down than the way up. The I2 is a pretty fast aircraft so I wouldn't expect this. We haven't seen this issue before.

2. Remember that the speed that is reported is the ground speed, not the airspeed. It might be going forward at 1 m/s but also up at 3 or 4 m/s.

Thanks for writing in, Zane.

No, it wasn't noticeably windy. The speed was 1 MPH and the altitude was remaining the same. During the same flight it would randomly go from 16MPH to 1MPH and would follow terrain on the way upslope, but not on the way downslope. I flew a Phantom3 immediately adjacent to continue the flights and it performed as expected, no slow speeds or issues following terrain. So luckily I had a contingency plan, but really disappointed that the Inspire2 did not work out. I tried the Inspire 2 again one last time to give it a try and it did the same thing again (not following terrain and flying really really slow.)

Please let me know if there is any suggestion to troubleshoot this and avoid it from happening again.

Weird...

Could you please email the log files for this flight to mapping@dronesmadeeasy.com?

Try turning off the obstacle avoidance system in DJI Go and trying it again. If the optics are dirty and facing into the sun it can set that system off and the aircraft will all but stop.The logs will tell us if this was the issue.

Hi Zane,

Not sure why but the flight logs in MapPilot are not allowing me to share/export. I hold down on the CSV file and it freezes the app. Don't have any other app running, powered down the tablet and back on. iPad is running current software update (12.2) on iPad mini 2.

The three CSV log files of concern are not able to be shared, the app freezes then gives me the error message that you can see below. It does not do this for any other log file, only the ones where the flights were acting up.

Any other way to export the files?

Note that it is trying to upload to AirData. If you don't have an AirData token entered in the Settings it is going to fail.

The text at the bottom of the screen says to "Hold to Share".

You could also use the Files app on the iOS device to move the files around.
