Terran Awareness in MP Pro with no Cel

I have been routinely using Terrain Awareness in Map Pilot with no cel service with great success. There is no cel service where I live.

I just gave you $100 for Map Pilot Pro. Terrain Awareness with no cel is now unserviceable.

With no cel, the iPad is connected to EITHER the drone or to WiFi/Internet.

Start connected to drone. New Mission. Double tap to define launch point. Enter mission extents. Switch tablet to WiFi and initiate use of terrain awareness. Tablet downloads the terrain data. Profile is good/it has terrain data loaded. Leave profile open on screen.

Connect WiFi to drone, and hit Upload Mission. It asks usual questions, including "Would you like to adjust the elevations to account for terrain changes? Current source SRTM 30m?px". I say "Yes." It says "Data Unavailable. Internet connection required."

The terrain data is downloaded, and displayed right on screen in profile. IT IS AVAILABLE.

I have been trying for 2 hours. I have done this many times before. But it simply no longer works. Do you have a workaround?

Well that's not good. I assume you are using 5.0.5, if not, you should be. 5.0.5 has been out for almost a month being used for hundreds of flights per day and we haven't heard of this issue.

I just did a couple of tests with a Mavic 2 Pro and my iOS device in Airplane mode and it works as expected.

This is not to say there could not be an issue. Terrain Awareness should still totally work while you are offline as long as the data is already present.

I am not sure what you mean by "the iPad is connected to EITHER the drone or to WiFi/Internet". The app can totally be connected to the internet while connected to the aircraft. I guess the only exception here is for with the P3 Standard (which sounds like might be the case). While we still technically support the P3 Standard we haven't tested with it in years. It sounds like all of this connection juggling is causes trouble. This may be the issue. That would also explain why we haven't had any reports of it since there aren't too many of those out there doing work any more.

There are some tests in the software to see if there is a network connection. Since you are connected to the aircraft via WiFi that answer is technically a "yes" so it might be trying to get some data from the internet since the connection is there (not necessarily terrain data since that is already present). Even though the connection isn't a real one. This could be a Phantom 3 Standard specific issue since Map Pilot Pro had a lot of rework done to the Terrain Awareness system.

Friday night is not a great time to debug issues and get out bug fixes though... If this is in fact a Phantom 3 Standard specific issue we would have to find one somewhere to test with.

At this time the only workaround would be to not use the Terrain Awareness system when flying. You can use it to figure out what height you would need to fly to do so safely. Between the Terrain Awareness plot and the Ground Offset you could set the data collection to be 70% and some amount above the highest point in the flight so everything that is lower than that highest point would get more overlap than your setting and your map would turn out fine. Or you could get a newer aircraft (just a suggestion) and be up and running immediately.

We will get this fixed or figured out for you ASAP and adjust your subscription expiration date to end one year from when the issue has been addressed. Best case would be having something out in the middle of next week.

The "EITHER internet or drone" matter: Because I have no cel service, the tablet's only way to access the internet is thru office or home WiFi. And the tablet's connection to drone controller is also thru WiFi. To best of my knowledge, tablet (iPad) cannot be logged into two WiFi networks simultaneously. So it is either connected to office WiFi or to Phantom3.

Yes, P3 is old and cheap. Remote forestry work with low clearance launch locations (gaps in tall trees) is high risk. Enough said.

Totally hear you about Friday Night. And about "connection juggling". It all works per normal until it is time to upload the mission, then it seems to perform an (unneeded?) check for live internet connection and fails.

Can fly without terrain, and used to do that. Cost me a drone. Live and work in mountains. Terrain Awareness good. Very good. Really hope there is a fix.

Ok. We would like you to try a couple of things for us since we aren't going to be able to get our hands on a P3S to test with.

Can you connect to the aircraft on WiFi, and then test a Terrain profile (using the button, not initiated via uploading) and see if that gives you any warnings? Essentially, we want to see if it is upload related or Terrain Aware related.
Have you tried the mission upload with Terrain Aware process without connecting/disconnecting drone while in the “new mission” view? We want to see switching the the internet while making a mission is effecting anything. Basically open new mission, connect to drone, draw mission, upload, select TA, continue to upload and take off.
Can you test doing a Terrain Aware profile not connected to drone, while in airplane mode (no WiFi or internet or any kind)? This is just to establish that it is working for you as it is for us.

We would like to get a fix for this out in our next release but need some feedback from you otherwise it will have to wait a while until we can find a P3 Standard to test with.

iPad connected to P3 via WiFi . Open MapPilot Pro. Press the Terrain Profile button at bottom of screen. It offers SRTM (98 ft/px). Press SRTM. Profile generates and displays.

(Note: This is only because the SRTM terrain data was previously downloaded for Office "takeoff site" using office WiFi connection during previous floundering, and is available in iPad storage for MapPilot Pro.)

OK, will try to do this.

Go to MP Pro. Put previous mission plan in garbage.

Restart iPad. WiFi connected to Phantom 3.

MP Pro, New Mission. Aircraft is connected, so no ability to set takeoff point.

Define boundaries / flight path for standard mission.

Press Terrain button at bottom of screen. It opens Profile menu, oddly, "Home" from an old flight is now in profiles menu. Was not there a few minutes ago, tho it was there on Saturday. SRTM is bordered by an orange line. Go with "profile". It generates, I believe from SRTM.

Try Upload. Usual questions. Want Terrain Awareness? Yes. Then, new stuff happens. Profile generates, and now has both Reject and Accept buttons at top of profile. Have only seen Reject for past many tries. Accept. Return to home height question. No, go with standard. It uploads and is ready to start.

What just happened? There now IS NO ISSUE. Drone is ready to go with terrain awareness on. And it did not demand an internet connection to upload the data that was already stored for the terrain profile.

I do not get it, but it seems to be working fine.

Tablet in AirPlane mode, but MP Pro and tablet still see the P3. OK, just Turn Off WiFi. That shuts it down. No drone seen.

Double tap to set takeoff point. Define mission extents and flight path.

Tap Profile, menu of profile sources opens, SRTM still outlined by orange. Tap profile again. Generates the profile, tho we are down to only "Reject" as option.

Go out and connect WiFi to drone in yard. Upload. Same process as was followed for Question 2 upload breaks out and is followed again, and drone is ready to fly with terrain awareness, just as I want.

Apparently I have been wasting your time and energy. It works. Did not work on Saturday, works today, pretty much same as it worked in previous MapPilot.

Apologies, and now back to work.

One more thing / long term enhancement.

Geodata environment I swim in includes LiDAR. I have very good Digital Elevation Model / Terrain data on my hard drive. Is there any hope of being able to import a user built DEM format? (Probalby geoTIF but whatever works, I can make it.) I thought this was possible in MapPilot, tho I never tried it. But after watching the videos for MP Pro, it looks like I misunderstood.

Yikes. Well at least it is working now. There might have been something weird with partially loaded data or something with all the connection switching. It is good to know that one of the main tenets of support is alive and well: reboot everything.
