Phantom 3 Standard WiFi Conection Range

I understand that if the wifi connection between drone and controller is lost, the drone will not be able to continue on its mission. Therefore the Phantom 3 Standard with its short wifi range would be a handicap for bigger mapping missions?

The latest iOS upgrade log mentioned about new connection modes. Does it mean that the "connectionless mode" mentioned in an earlier forum reply is now available, and the drones are able to fly before wifi range?

If the WiFi connection is lost, the aircraft will continue on with the flight as it has been programmed. You will not receive updates and the Standard has no Return to Home button so it will likely be a pretty scary situation while this occurs. Since it is the app that does the triggering of the camera the aircraft will be flying along doing nothing.

The Standard is usually pretty good for close flights which is why draw a guide circle at 500 m to provide a reference. Maintaining line of site and a solid connection is important for both safety and data integrity.

The "new connection" stuff in the latest update has more to do with the update DJI SDK and does not refer to a connection-less operation mode.

Thanks for the explanation, so for undulating terrain choosing a high point for the operator home position is important for mission safety and effectiveness.

Yes. The taking off near the high point in the survey area will usually help with maintaining a strong connection as well.
