I had two pre-planned flights today and I had the same problem both times. These were large areas right around the maximum with one battery each (in fact I over estimated on both flights, and needed a second battery twice). I turned on the remote and the drone. I fired up DJI pilot to set the home point. I then opened up the mapping app, took off, uploaded the mission and started. Immediately I noticed that the camera view was shuddering every couple seconds with black bars scrolling through the image. After a couple pictures were taken the camera view dropped out completely, and I saw a black and white image from takeoff on the screen. The drone kept flying the route, but the locator pin in map pilot never returned, and no gray dots were appearing. Both times I called it home using the remote (the app had completely lost communication) and landed visually. Both times I landed, closed everything and started the flight without dji pilot, and everything ran according to plans.
What version of Map Pilot was this? Is DJI Pilot the DJI Go app? You shouldn't need to switch back and forth at all and Map Pilot will set the home point for you. You shouldn't need to turn open DJI Go unless you just want to do a test flight and check for updates.

Aha! I thought I had to set the home point in the DJI software. I will leave it off from now on. I bet that was the problem.
Pardon my ignorance of IOS, but when you say, turn off DJI GO, do you mean that it can't be visible when I double click the home button? In other words, can I start up the flight and compass calibration with DJI Go, then click the menu button, and start Map Pilot? Or, do I have to double click the map button, and swipe DJI Go up to remove it from the list?
There can only be one app connected to the device at time so turning the unused app off all the way helps of a lot of issues.
On iOS, you close apps by pressing the Home button twice quickly and then swiping up on the app you want to close.
