It is likely that they are SUPER HUGE. GIS software such as QGIS is designed to deal with large files well.
For example: your last job was 27271 x 20823. That is over 500 megapixels.
You will have to try various viewers and try to find one that you can open it and possibly reduce the resolution. Photoshop should work. Try Irfan View if you need something free. For Macs, Preview works fine.
