Using this for measuring property square footage

Hello,

I'm having a hard time figuring out if this can help me or not.  I run a landscaping company and us Goilawn.com to measure our commercial properties for turf and mulch square footage as well as their parking lots.  The images are from 2006 and a lot of places we manage aren't even on the aerial photos yet.

Can I use this system to fly over these properties, take the photos to get accurate up to date maps and accurately measure these square footages? If so what do I need and how does it work?

Thanks,

Chris

Yep! We generally report our area measurements in square yards but that is a trivial conversion.

The Steps:

  1. Buy a compatible drone from DronesMadeEasy.com
  2. Use our Map Pilot app to collect data.
  3. Use your free points from Maps Made Easy to create a map.
  4. Make measurements.

That's pretty much it!

Thank you, is there anyway to see and test the actual results?

Thank you, I am on a Microsoft Surface and I see that it says touch enabled devices do not have access to the measurements.  All of my devices including my 27" all in one in the office are touch.  Is there a way around that?

Thanks, that was able to help me out and allowed me to measure square footage.

A few more questions now that I have saw how it worked.

-Can you measure more than one area at a time?  For example, can I measure lawn area in 10 different areas of the property that aren't connected and have the software keep track of that?  What I currently use allows me to measure all the lawn area, sidewalks, mulch, lot etc while tracking a total of each.

-Can you get a closer image to measure off of?

You can make imagery that is as detailed as you like and can make numerous measurements.

A bit of a late post, but I`ve used MME and a P3Pro to map 18 large fields totaling over 1200 acres.

All images were processed flawlessly and the final output maps allowed me to take measurements of damage caused to these fields using either the in-built MME measuring tools or by importing the final geo-referenced images into Google Earth Pro.

I highly recommend this approach which works great!!!

Thanks again for the info.  I am looking to purchase a DJI Mavic, will I be able to use that with your system?

Thanks, sorry for all the questions.  So once I get the mavic, I d/l your software?  How does this all work?

Also, I use android devices, is that not able to use your software?  I see you have a tool for IOS, but not android.

Is there someone I can maybe call and speak to get some clarity?

Gary:  Thanks for the info, what is MME?

Sorry Chris - Maps Made Easy - the iOS app. I use it on my iPad Air with the Phantam 3 pro. It's a great app - even when you have to do multi battery missions. As I said in my previous post, I used if for a large job and it performed flawlessly.

There were a number of times when my P3 was at the limit of the permitted range - 500m here in the U.K. (and within line of sight) - but the drone and the app were flawless. I was nervous on a number of occasions, but the drone flew the planned route great.

If I can help any further (if I have already!) then please let me know - it's a great app and P3P drone combination! 😄👍

Gary: Thanks again for the information.  I finally received my drone, got familiar with it, and flew my first MME mission over my residence =).

I was going to do a fly over on one of the properties we maintain this week and I was setting up the map on the MME app.  I had a few questions:

Its a 53 acre site according to the MME app.  I have it flying at 125' for .6in/px detail.

So, it says it will take 1927 photos totaling 9.6gb.  What ways are possible to process this info?  The site says it has a maximum of 1600 photos, but I want maximum resolution.

How do you export it to google earth for measurements?

Also, this says it will be 6 batteries, at the moment I have 3.  I assume it will return home on a low battery for replacement, but how do I handle when I have to let them charge back up to resume flight?

Thanks!

Hi Chris

Congratulations on your first flight!

Flying multi battery missions is explained in the help topic here:- https://support.dronesmadeeasy.com/hc/en-us/articles/206104736-Flying-Multi-Battery-Missions

If you save your flight, you'll be able to return to it at any point even if you have had to recharge batteries in the meantime.

The area you're considering is large for one mission and exceeds the permissible number of images to be processed in one map - so, why not split it in two. So long as you have a decent overlap between the two missions then there won't be a problem stitching them together. This should solve your max images problem - although, the resolution you're using will always create a large volume of images - is there a reason for this level of detail? There may well be, but I've been using a minimum of 60m (196ft) upto 120m (393ft) and these give really great maps - I'm happy to send you some examples for you to look at if you send an email address (if that's allowed?)

As for Google Earth - I downloaded the Pro version and imported the finished maps using the geo referenced option - then used the inbuilt measurement tools. Although, for length or simple area measurements the inbuilt measuring tools on the desktop version are fine.

Hope this helps! 😄

Thanks again Gary, some samples would be great!  mane3215@gmail.com

I am trying some flights today to look at the detail from them, but the reason to try to get such high res is because I am measuring lawn/mulch square footage so I just want that to be as accurate as possible, since the mulch would lead to material ordering.  Hopefully the lesser res is sufficient and makes everything easier.

In regards to the photos, are you sayin I could fly half the property, stich and save, fly the second half overlapping the first, stich and save, then upload the two halves?  That would be great if that worked.

Just for clarification, Map Pilot is the iOS app and Maps Made Easy is the processing service.

Maps Made Easy is capable of processing up to 5000 images (up to 7000 with approval) for the Camera GPS workflow which is the one that is used with DJI aircraft.
