Ground point Image

The image that is taken at the take off point for determining relative elevation is obviously going to be an image that doesn't "fit" with the set.  Does the process expect this and toss it out using only the exif data, or ?

Correct. This image does not get included in the image data products but it is automatically detected and the rest of the images are adjusted accordingly. If it is not there it will use the tags that are available.
