Terrain awareness fail??

So I love that MP has terrain awareness to essentially create AGL missions. I use a similar feature in Litchi where I can specify whether the waypoint altitude is relative to takeoff point or above the waypoint ground level. Makes planning missions in hilly terrain much easier.

But in my first Map Pilot test mission where I selected to use terrain awareness I got an error: out of bounds... no data.. something like that?? Same places I use Litchi AGL capability with no problems. Is there a setting I missed?

I am not familiar with how other apps do it but our system uses an offline cachable terrain system that lets you take the data into the field with you and make route adjustments on the fly. It does not use internet once the data is loaded. My guess would be that other apps use Google Elevation Services for their terrain awareness.

As noted in the Terrain Awareness article, we use the SRTM data set which is available between 60N and 56S latitudes.

If you are outside these areas you are in fact out of bounds for our terrain service. The likelihood of you being that far north or south is unlikely though so it is possible you may be having a data related problem.

If you are trying to use our Custom Terrain feature make sure that the takeoff location and all waypoints are within the colorized area.

If you continue to have issues with it please email us a screenshot of the error and the state of the layout so we can see what is going on.

OK, I did not go through that "3rd party data access" password business, so perhaps that's why my terrain awareness didn't work. I was logged into the Business app and thought that would be enough. Why all this rigamarole to get the terrain data??

Using the iPad Mini browser I logged into my MME account and found the required 3rd party access password but in this process I logged out of the mobile app and there is no place in the settings to log back in, much less apply the 3rd party password. Very strange. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled... even restarted the iPad Mini 4... same deal. No log in screen or menu selection under settings or anywhere else that I can see in the Map Pilot app. And the only thing 3rd party related is to select the arc data or drop box. But no password boxes anywhere.

As of version 3.1 you don't have to do the Access Password thing anymore as long as you are logged in to Maps Made Easy. There is a note in the Data Access Setup section that says this.

OK, I reflew the mission today and terrain worked perfectly. I believe it was operator error yesterday. I looked at the bright white terrain icon and thought it was turned on but in playing around with it some more afterwards I see that it gets an orange highlight when turned on and the plain bright white is off. Kind of against typical convention where dim is off and bright is on, but I see it now. I really like the pop up flight path profile.

My out of bounds message may have referred to my takeoff position not being where I set the blue dot. They were running mowers near where I planned to take off so I moved about 30 meters away on the field. I didn't bother to reset the takeoff point... but the mission still executed correctly. I did not get the out of bounds message today when I took off from the planned location.

I won't bother to post these images for a map since they are essentially the same as what I did yesterday, and that map looked good.
