They are likely operating in a connectionless state which just sends the aircraft out with the intervalometer set to 5 seconds. It will take images at different speeds (bad for accuracy) and cover less ground because the image interval is so long. Map Pilot attempts to address these two issues by maintaining a constant connection. We will be adding a connectionless option in a future release.
For the same reasons listed above, connectionless apps are not susceptible to loss of progress since the aircraft is acting fully autonomously. For data accuracy and safety reasons we don't think that is a very good idea. Trade offs... We are working to add saved progress to a future release.
