I own a Phantom 4 Pro Plus. I understand Map Pilot now works with the Phantom 4 Pro, so I would need to purchase the standard remote and use with an ipad.
However for not much more, I could purchase a Phantom 3 Pro and would have a second drone.
The question is whether there is much difference in the image quality and resultant map between using a Phantom 4 Pro and a Phantom 3 Pro.
I want to know if it would be better to make the Phantom 4 Pro work than to use a Phantom 3 for my map making.

The Phantom 4 Pro is making some really nice results and I would say that it is quite a step up from the P3, or even the P4.
The P4P Plus is definitely a difficult trade off for people to make. We think DJI will eventually allow Android apps to run on it but that won't help the users of most professional apps like Map Pilot.

So I suppose you would recommend that I stay with my P4P and get another remote controller so I can run your app, instead of going the route of a P3P to use for mapping?
Since the angle of view is less on the P4P and also since it has a bigger sensor, are you getting more detail out of those photos?
Does the P3P equal the P4P if more photos are taken and at lower altitudes?
Do you have any sample maps made by the P4P?

Buying a redundant piece of gear is a hard recommendation to make but we are really liking the results from the P4P so we wouldn't want to tell you to get gear that is almost 2 generations old...
Detail level calculations can be checked in Map Pilot but the general guideline is that the P3/X3 cameras got 2.5 cm GSD at 60 meters and the Phantom 4 Pro gets 1.6 cm at the same height.
The difference between the P3 and the P4P is this:
Taken with the P3 from 60 meters
Same bush taken with Phantom 4 Pro from 60 meters.
Also, everything comes out a lot flatter and more repeatable. Much finer vertical details are shown with the smaller GSD.

I suppose I should go ahead now and purchase the regular controller for the P4P. (There goes my excuse to own two drones).
Does it make any sense to keep two controllers--one for oblique images and video (the P4P+ controller) and one for mapping (regular controller and ipad)?
I personally have always liked the "bring your own display" approach that DJI had. We all have our preferences. I think the overhead of having two controllers would get annoying after a while since no cases are designed for that.
What I don't understand about the two images is why the P4P image area appears to be about 6X that of the P3P.
Was the P3P image resized differently than the P4P?
I'm thinking that the area of a full size P4P image should be a little less than 2X that of the P3P. Is that right?
These images are snapshots from the different zoom levels shown in our maps. The GSD of the native files is 1.6cm vs 2.5cm which would correspond to about 2.5 times the pixels on target.
Remember that the numbers get squared.
I have an Inspire 1 Pro with the X5 camera. I'm using the 25mm lens at 100 meters for 1.5cm resolution. However, the problem is that it can't fire more frequently than once every five seconds, so the flight speed is limited to around 6 m/s. That limits how much territory I can cover with one battery, (maybe 15 minutes of flying time).
Based on your experiences with the P4P, how much acreage can you cover with one battery? How fast can it fly? I think I read that it can take pictures more quickly than the 1 per 5 seconds of the Inspire 1 Pro.
Based on the image quality of the samples you posted, and since I'm facing having to buy as many as 6 (more) TB48 batteries for my larger missions, would I be better off putting that money toward a P4P?

The P4P is our recommended system for mapping these days. The narrower field of view and higher resolution get the GSD down near what could be achieved with the X5 and with much higher framing speed.
The Inspire 2 with X5S is also an option as it will frame at 2 seconds instead of 4 seconds like the X5.
