In my recent map Auburn Down Town Street Lights, I would like to have the black/dark areas of the building footprints (and other unlit areas in the overall image) blacked out, without any appearance of Google Maps appearing like a watermark. Our client would like the dramatic effect of unlit areas versus street-light-lit areas for their street light replacement project.
That is a very specific request... I would recommend using Map Tiler or some tiling tool on the GeoTiff we generate to make a new map you can host and control the basemap yourself.
Another option would be to draw blacked out annotations around the area.
Select full black and full opacity.
Black out as needed.

Another thing you could do is make a Location Map using that layer and one with Google Streets behind it.
