You can plan things that are far away but you don't do it while the aircraft is connected. Then it thinks you are going to take off from where you are and no battery is able to get you to that location and back.
You need to disconnect from the aircraft and double tap (iOS) or long press to drop the purple anticipated takeoff location dot. Then plan your flight from there and save it.
