Omitting the center of a lake due to pics over water

Hey Guys, I have a question regarding mapping a lake.  My customer is primarily interested in generating surfaces of the shorelines of a 1000 acre lake. If I fly the whole thing, I'll end up with at least 300 photos showing nothing but the water, which I know is difficult to stitch. My questions is, if I position my flights to only the shores of the lake, omitting the center of the lake, will this help or hurt the processing? Will there be a hole in my data or can this area be filled in as a flat, level surface?  Thanks!! Please reply to Matt@rapid-aerial.com

Interesting question... It won't be filled in if no images are taken. And it won't likely stitch very well unless the lake is really shallow and has some fixed features that are visible.

One way to do this, that we don't generally recommend but has worked in the past, is to do the edges at the detail level that you actually want. Then take a few images from either WAY up such that the images will have shore line to anchor to. You could also try some that oblique enough that you will be able to get some fixed features in there and fill in the center. Just be sure not to include any horizon.

Give us a heads up if you end up submitting something like this so we can keep an eye on it.

Thanks Zane, the lake is quite a bit larger than I originally expected but we'll be flyi when it's very low which could help. I'll definitely keep you posted thanks!
