Negative calculated volumes

I have just run a pretty big 3D modelisation of an area near my house and while I run some volume calculations on it, I get very strange results such as negative calculated volumes.

Volume Calculation

Calculated Volume: -232.88 m³

Void Volume: 1,610.43 m³

Minimum Height: 87.83 m
Maximum Height: 92.72 m
Area of Measurement: 748.15 m²

It gets even worse when I try and measure the volume of a pit...
It is a recurring problem on that map as I get negative volume 80% of the time.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Sorry to hear you are experiencing issues. Please try using a lot more points to define your measurement polygon. 20-30 points will give us a good dynamic base with which we can do the calculations. Simply dropping 3 or 4 points will not likely work out well as you have found.

I have made more calculation on the same surface. I even tested a perfect triangular shape : a squared surface at the base with a constant slope. The result I get is extremely strange :

Volume Calculation

Calculated Volume: -0.26 m³

Void Volume: 33.77 m³

Minimum Height: 118.56 m
Maximum Height: 121.76 m
Area of Measurement: 21.61 m²

I really need help on that issue... I'm completely stuck and no other known option for volume calculation.

This is however a recurring issue. I have run into the same pitfall for much larger areas.

Here is my last experiment :

Calculated Volume: -91,404.79 m³

Void Volume: 235,169.49 m³

Minimum Height: 107.98 m
Maximum Height: 131.23 m
Area of Measurement: 18139.59 m²

The number of point is on top of that quite large as the output is 16618 x 25993 @ 3.7 cm/pixel

Anything special I need to do?
