Drone went straight into mountain

I am perplexed.

I did my planing in advance since the location I was going to survey was remote and no mobile/internet signal would be available.

I marked my take off location and area for survey, this particular are was remote, we reached by helicopter and landed in a small valley.  The area had some small hills about 600-800 ft high. The survey was planned for 400 ft AGL (Above Ground Level).

Drone took off and flew straight into the mountain, it only went 400 ft from the take off point and not taking into account anything in the area.

Needless to say, drone is unreachable, complete loss.

I am just trying to figure out how to plan such a survey as it was a complete disaster.

Sorry to hear about your incident.

When the altitude of the flight is set it is done in relation to the takeoff point. All flight will occur at that altitude. Various locations in our documentation talk about this being the case. This is also the case with all DJI waypoint flight and even the standard use of the DJI Go app. As with the Go app, if you took your aircraft up to 400 ft and point it towards a 800 ft hill it is likely going to crash into something.

With the Phantom 4 that is equipped with forward obstacle sensor the behavior while under automated control is still pretty undefined. The flight plan should be designed to not hit anything. Period.

Even on the Phantom 4, there is no capability for the aircraft to know anything about the conditions below the aircraft unless it is within a few meters of the ground and is equipped with an ultrasonic distance sensor.

We highly recommend testing things in controlled settings before going out into the field and trying advanced things.  A single test on a smaller hill would have shown that this wasn't the case.

Due to the single elevation limitation of the DJI waypoint flight we always recommend taking off at the high point in the survey area, not the low point. This allows the aircraft to clear everything and let the overlap calculation be overestimated not underestimated.

Any time you are not clear on something please ask before risking your aircraft.
