The drone wastes more time not taking pictures, doing the zig zag default pattern, than it does actual taking them. At least half of the flight is wasted time doing nothing. Thanks for any advice.
There is a long, narrow piece of land that I need to map. When setting up the mission I noticed the pattern extends far behind the boundary of the mission I set. I can adjust the mission to fly straight up and down which results in a lower flight time and less images. Is the default layout optimized for the best map quality? Or is it just a generic default that does not take into account map quality? Does changing the path to the straight up and down lead to a less detailed map versus the default plan?
see attachments. Zig zag pattern is default flight path. Parallel is adjusted. When flying the zigzag pattern there is a lot of time wasted, without taking any pictures.

That just has to do with where you drew the purple dot. Draw a line from the purple dot to the middle of the survey area. That is how the passes are oriented by default. If you drew it halfway down the long side outside of the survey area it would be different.
In general you should always be adjusting the pass orientation to maximize for flight time and coverage.
I always like having the passes be square with the shape and not have any long diagonals but still not have a ton of small passes like either of these.
That long thing shape isn't going to be great though because it only has 2-3 passes. If you are only doing 2-3 passes you should increase the amount of across track overlap so get more data. If you don't want to do that you should increase the along track overlap to increase the amount of data. Nothing is going to turn out unless you are getting at least 16-20+ looks at everything. If you only have two passes and your along track overlap is set to 75% you are only going to get 8 looks at everything.
It doesn’t matter where the purple dot is though. I can put it anywhere and the flight is still the same zig zag pattern. Doesn’t change at all.
It matters where you put it first. When you move it around it won't change.
I tired that also. Didn’t have one effect on the pattern. It does not matter where the purple dot is placed before or after creating the boundary. Also, the app does crash now during map creation....just happened again
Wide thin survey area defined with the home point designated to the middle of the south edge.
Wide thin survey area defined with the home point designated to the middle of the west edge.
Any movement of the purple dot after the initial placement will not affect the layout.
Isn’t doing that for me even when creating a larger mission in a different location. Same exact plan no matter where purple marker is placed. Placing purple marker first then boundaries. Delete and try again placing purple dot in a different location. Set boundaries. Exact same flight path. Can’t upload screenshot from my phone. Limit is 2mb. Screenshot must be too large. I did exactly what you did, just in a different area
I actually just tried creating the same exact map you did. In the same location. Mine does not function that way at all. I tried changing heights. I tried changing overlap settings. It does not function any way like yours is.
Are you using an Apple device? What operating system are you using?
I just tried creating the boundaries first and then adding the purple dot. Exact same area as you just posted. There’s no change at all. Happens on both iPad and iPhone. Both running iOS 14
Our apps only work on iOS devices. Maybe do a screen recording video and send a Dropbox or Google Drive link to that video to us so we can see what you are seeing.
Zane,
Have you had a chance to review the video I posted? Any update?
Hmmm. What version of Map Pilot are you using? Did you open the screen via a saved mission or a fresh layout?
I am not able to reproduce that at all with a fresh layout.
MP BUSINESS 4.1.13
iOS 14.01
What version iOS are you running?
Brand new mission. Did you watch the video?
Bottom line - What is going to be done about this issue? No offense, but honestly seems like a lot of excuses being made with no effort to see what’s going on and how to correct it.
This is just one of the issues. Crashing is happening quite often also. Never happened before iOS 14
I am using 13.7. Yes I watched the video. You are definitely getting different behavior than I am seeing.
If you have opted to not allow Map Pilot to access the iOS devices's location per the new iOS 14 restrictions the app will not be able to use it to draw the passes to align with the takeoff location and the survey area's center of mass. In this case the default layout orientation is 0 degress (which is what you are seeing).
No offense (as you have offered) but this isn't the biggest issue on the planet. If your alignment isn't right, rotate it. Yes, it shouldn't do what you are seeing and we are looking into it but this is an easy thing to work around...
We generally never update until a bunch of updates occur except for on development only devices. I doubt this issue is related to the update though
Again, crashing related issues are a different topic but haven't been reported in thousands of daily flights using iOS 14+. We can't apply "effort to see what’s going on and how to correct it" until we see some sort of pattern or can reproduce the issue. I am sure you understand this and the fact that short of releasing a new version of the app nothing can be done at this point.
Thanks for the reply. Update to the latest iOS and see for yourself how multiple things in the app no longer function properly and crashes frequently, especially during mission planning.
When could we expect the next version to be released?
We are not experiencing any crashes during layout on our iOS 14 devices.
We have determined that the behavior you are seeing with the initial layout being North South aligned is the intended behavior. I was mistaken in saying it wasn't due to actually being on a different build that is publicly released. This was changed with the release of 4.1.13 to address issues that occur in very low altitude high overlap layouts.
This default to North South orientation is how it will be moving forward. It is easy to change the orientation to your needs using the two finger rotate gesture that has been in place for 5+ years.
If you are noticing certain parts of the layout process that are repeatedly causing crashes please take a video of it occurring and let us know exactly what iOS device and version you are using.
Thanks for the update. I don't understand why your device is doing things completely different then mine from your comment.....you have a different version than the publicly released one?
As for crashes:
iPhone 7 Plus and iPad Pro 11". Both have fresh installs of iOS14.01. Devices wiped and installed from iTunes.
Most crashes happen consistently during mission creation. Usually upon placing the 3rd boundary marker. I see a flight path quickly pop-up on the screen and then it crashes. Upon re-opening, it works fine for a while.
Also happens intermittently during rotation of flight path. Sorry, no time to get another video together and posted
