Map Pilot App Crashing

Inspire 1 Pro / iPad Mini w/ IOSv9.3.4, Map Pilot for DJI v2.1.3, DJI Go v2.8.6

When I try to load the 'Saved Mission', it goes through the preliminaries, but when it should finish and allow an upload to the drone, the app totally crashes and closes out.  I reloaded the app, reloaded DJI, restarted, .. same results numerous times.

The drone flies just fine in DJI Go... I just can't load a mission from Map Pilot.

  Thanks, Jim W.

I have always run DJI Go in the background, but will try it without.

I have just recently begun logging flights and will try to figure out how to find the .plist files and send them to you.

Have also had issues recently with the Map Pilot app not allowing me to update the Home Point, so I have used DJI Go to do that after takeoff and before opening Map Pilot.. That has been working, but I consider it a crude workaround.

Thank you very much for your quick response! - Jim in Oceanside.

From the Quick Start Guide:

"The walkthrough assumes that you already have the device connected to the remote and everything powered up. Open the DJI Go app just to make sure that everything is in working order. Close it before opening Map Pilot."

Also, DJI Go running in the background is likely to cause all sorts of issues.

No .plist files because app crashed and didn't record anything.

Drone works fine by itself, with DJI Go and Drone Deploy.  I will try re-loading the app and try again.. I can't think of anything else.

Thanks, Jim.  c)817.291.8951

I'm having the exact same problem.  App was working fine last week.  Today it's crashing as soon as it recognizes the aircraft.  Inspire 1, 2.8.6 on the GO app (not running in the background it always gets closed) aircraft firmware 1.9.1.30.  Maps Made Easy version 2.1.3 build 08092016

I'm starting to think this is related to the last Map Pilot update to v2.1.3.  I had two good flights on it and then it started crashing....

Also, to aid in your troubleshooting,...

I also have a tokens activated forHealthy Drones  and Terrain Aware.

After I reload Map Pilot, I'll fly it without the tokens to see if that makes a difference, then if it works add the Healthy Drone token, then if still good, the Terrain Aware.

Anyone else have any ideas out there?  Are you successfully using Terrain Aware with the v2.3.1 update?

Jim: The flights.plist file is created when you save a mission. You should be able to email it directly from the Log File Manager. Since you have the terrain aware token in there you might want to try using the Terrain Aware button to preview the flight's elevation profile and download the tiles. It might be an issue with having the token in there but not downloading the data first. We will try to duplicate this.

Andrew: This might be an issue with what version you updated from. If you want you can either delete and then reinstall or delete the current version of the persist.plist file using iTunes. There might be an incompatibility. Also, make sure you are updated to 2.1.3 since that was released to fix that specific issue.

Had some successful flights today, but had to use workarounds:

1. Reloaded Map Pilot but did not load tokens for Healthy Drones and Terrain Aware.  Since then no app crashes.  I will try to determine the bad actor soon.

2.  Still having a problem with Map Pilot retrieving the Home Point when a mission loads. The workaround that we have come up with is:

-  Takeoff with Map Pilot off (not in background)

-  Update the Home Point after takeoff from the DJI Go App

-  Open Map Pilot

-  Switch the flight mode to "F"

-  Load the mission

-  Start the mission

3.  Map Pilot still intermittently does not display the red drone position triangle and also intermittently displays the camera view (lower window) after the mission loads.

Had a strange anomaly today:  Loaded a mission and didn't notice that the displayed mission tracks were 90 degrees off - the same orientation it originally displayed in planning until it was changed and saved.  The flight mission display was 90 degrees off but the drone flew the saved/correct flight path even though the displayed path on the screen was 90 degrees from what it was flying!  Weird.

4.  We flew with DJI Go open in the background, as always, with no problems noted.

Thanks, Jim.

I have exactly the same issue. Inspire 1 pro, iPad Air2 and Map pilot 2.1.3 (latest update). It crashes as soon as the aircraft is detected. Tried everything, even a clean app reinstall without previous .pref files or mission files, terrain and healthy drones tokens, etc. Is there any way to revert to the previous version? I need it working for a post-wildfire important project by the end of the week.

Cheers.

Guys, I think that I've isolated the culprit. If I turn off the "Show Image Footprints" option the app works as expected, no issues. If this option is on, the app crashes immediately after the drone is detected (In my case an Inspire1"). As a matter of fact the app goes to the background and stays in the main menu. Now it's working with all tokens on and even with the DJi app in the background. I hope that MME team solve this issue because all the other software that I use with other photogrammetric drones have this "Show Image Footprints" feature and I really like it.

If you don't mind, I would like to ask for a "crossed grid path" if possible. These grids with stripes in 90º angle are good to reduce errors in both X and Y directions.

Cheers

OK, guys.  I loaded the new v2.1.4 that 'fixed' the Terrain Aware issue.

  - DJI said good to go, so killed that app.

  - Started Maps app, and when I asked it to load a mission, it crashed shortly afterwords (after camera settings..) .

  - I tried it 4 different times, re-booted the iPad mini, generated a new mission.  Same results with app crashing before finishing boot up.

  - Then I deleted my Terrain Aware token and de-selected the 'Display Image Footprints'.

  * Then the Map app would load, complete with a good red triangle and camera view.  HOWEVER, when I tried to load the mission in the F-mode, I got the dreaded Home Point Warning banner with no ability to update it.

Help, Tudor!  We are 9 days from going commercial.  Thanks, Jim.

Hi Jim

You have to check for some reason, maybe specific to the Matrice Platform that might be responsible for those issues. Yesterday and today I've made 12 surveys, all with MP and an Inspire/Z3, and I had no issues at all. Everything went just smoothly. Only had yesterday a small issue with a multi-battery mission - the red triangle did not appear and the software was not giving echo of the drone position. However the distance was being updated as well as the number of photos taken. I've let the mission end and in the end I confirmed that plan was maintained by the drone. Beyond that small graphical issue, nothing more to report.

Best Regards

rhenriques11:  Thanks for the feedback.  I'm flying an Inspire1 Pro / mini iPad II / X5 camera.

I'll try reloading the app when I have time. - Jim.

I Jim, Sorry :-) I thought that you were flying a Matrice by mistake with another post. Try to reinstall because the app, at least with my Inspire 1 and a ZX3 camera is working normally.

However, I had some problems today with a multi-battery mission. The drone failed to start in the blue dot and took photos while "in route" to a point in another stripe after skipping the previous one (that had the blue dot in the beginning). Very strange. After this, in a new mission after shutting off the radio, the drone and restarted MP, the mission started without the Red Triangle Echo and I only knew that the drone was keeping the mission because, strangely, the "photo taken" gray points started to appear were they should. After, in the last line, the drone took photos in the right direction, reversed to come to the home point and took photos again in the reverse direction! Very strange. The image preview, in both last described missions, turned gray, without any image.

There are still some issues to solve. They do not compromise the missions but they ruin the app nice experience and tend to frighten the user. Mostly seem to be graphical or cosmetic issues.

Cheers

Jim: iPad mini 2 shouldn't not be used with any DJI related apps. As with DJI Go, Map Pilot requires an A7 processor or better which appeared in the iPad mini 3 and up.

We haven't experienced this issue with the red triangle no showing up. Usually if it say connected and you can't see the red triangle it is actually at 0,0 latitude/longitude (off the west coast of Africa). This is usually due to connecting to the aircraft before the GPS fix has been achieved. We recommend never taking off if the red triangle isn't where it should be. That is a really good way to loose your aircraft.

We test and test and test for everything we can but there are still weird things that happen with these aircraft. ALWAYS make sure all other drone related apps are fully closed. If anything else is running there will be contention for the connection to the drone and signals can be missed.

Hey, folks...My bad.  I am using a iPad Mini 4, not a 2.

I flew some more today.  Re-loaded Map Pilots from the App Store.  Did not load tokens for Terrain Aware or Healthy Drones.

Still having issues with the Home Point.  I am waiting for the red triangle before taking off, but still have to start up DJI, update the Home Point, then restart Map Pilot to load a mission.  I'm getting tired of this!

I want to fly with the tokens and not have to do anything with DJI.

Could someone who is NOT having issues please give me a start to finish procedure so that I might find the error of my ways?  Thanks, Jim.

This home point issue only seems to be happening on the Inspire Pro... We have 3 reports of this happening from 3 Inspire Pro users.

rhenriques11: The restarting at the abandonment point issue is likely caused by manual landing. If you don't see a message that says "Flight 1 Completed" when you land, there is a problem. If you manually take the aircraft over to fly it back and land it make sure that the PAF (PSA) switch is back in the programmed flight mode by the time you land so the app can get the message that it has landed and copy things around appropriately. If this doesn't occur it will be out of sync.

Not sure on those "graphical issues" though...

I have 2.1.4 installed using P3P and Sequoia sensor. Also having app crash issues. Should the DJI GO be shut down between steps 2 and 3?

- Takeoff with Map Pilot off (not in background)
- Update the Home Point after takeoff from the DJI Go App
- Open Map Pilot
- Switch the flight mode to "F"
- Load the mission
- Start the mission

Never ever ever ever ever ever have other drone related apps running at the same time. This is a really good way to make your aircraft fly away.

That's what I suspected Zane but that particular step was omitted after step 2 but included in step 1. Thanks.

Jim: Are you getting the "dreaded home point warning" when you are on the ground or in the air? We currently only allow the Home Point to be set with the aircraft on the ground but could be an issue for Inspire Pro users that have to manually take off... We used to have a gesture to force the home point to be set but we suspect that was causing other issues.

The aircraft must be on the ground when you hit the "Upload" button. If you are not the homing attempt will fail.

Jim - No it's on the ground. I'm using a P3P with a Sequoia sensor on it. I'm running into all types of messing errors. Could really use some direction. Thank you.

A DJI camera is required to take off with a P3P. The Sequoia is only supported with our Agronaut system. Please start another thread if you have more questions on that. Not having a camera on your aircraft is a pretty good way to have things crash as well.

Hi, Tudor.  I've been gone for a week, so sorry for the delayed response.

I have been delaying takeoff until I get a good red triangle (Home Point?) displayed, as well as a good camera picture.  After takeoff, I get the 'Home Point' warning when I try to upload the mission.

That is without any other apps running in the background and with a good home point update from DJI Go . ( I start with DJI Go, check for good flight status, start the motors.. with "Your home point has been updated" aural, and then kill DJI Go.

Then I start Map Pilot, check for triangle and camera, and takeoff in F mode.  I establish a hover with gear up, switch to P mode and try to upload the stored mission. That is when I get the home point warning.

Thanks for your help, Jim.  c. 817.291.8951

Make sure the Range in the top status bar is less than 10 meter or you will get the Home Point error. When you set the Home Point this number will be 0. The error says that the Home Point is not set "for this location". You cannot set the home point far away from where you initially set it. The idea is that the aircraft should always come back to where it starts.
