Drone and App errors

Hi all, I just got back from a two day mission out of cell service. Things didn't really go smoothly. I'm flying the inspire 1 still, with Map Pilot Pro. I've used it for years and didn't have much problems with the app. Last weekend, however, I was running into error after error. The drone would disconnect from the app after takeoff, I would get a radius error, so I wouldn't be able to take off, and the drone would fly at 2-4m/s due to low light conditions. This was in the middle of the day with overcast. The worst error I had was when the app was trying to connect with the drone. I would see 'Looking for Drone' and then get an error saying that I need an Internet connection for a drone that's never connected to the app before. Even though I've been flying (slowly) minutes before. Sometimes if I restarted the app, or restarted the drone, it would connect and would fly until I had to change the battery again. Overall, I spent two full days trying to get the app to work.and got about a quarter of the area done... I had two different iPads that had the same issues. Does anyone have any tips on how to fix it? And does anyone have any suggestions for other apps that would be good for data collection on large-scale areas? I need apps that follow terrain and can import a shapefile. Thanks for the help. And sorry for being a bit frustrated.

We are sorry to hear you are having issues. I don't see an account for you in the system so I can't look up your flight history. Please email us with your username so we can look it up.

What does this mean:

"The drone would disconnect from the app after takeoff, I would get a radius error, so I wouldn't be able to take off, and the drone would fly at 2-4m/s due to low light conditions"

Couldn't take off and then flew slowly? I don't understand how that happens.

Overcast conditions at this time of year can lead to very slow flight on older cameras (and some new ones). If you want to disable that feature you can do so in the Settings.

Make sure you don't have any other drone related apps running at the time you are using Map Pilot Pro. Also, make sure you are using a recent mobile device. I can't tell what you are using because I can't find your account but some of these issues sound device related to me.

Map Pilot Pro doesn't accept shapefiles but does support KML imports which should be easy to create from your shapefile.

  1. Did you recently update Map Pilot Pro?
  2. What is the version of Map Pilot Pro?
  3. Did you recently update your Inspire 1 / RC firmware?
  4. What is your AC / RC firmware?
  5. Registration with DJI / Autel only needs Internet the first time - Are these fresh installs of Map Pilot Pro? (You mentioned you had used it for years)
  6. “The drone would disconnect from the app after takeoff”. Does this happen consistently?
  7. “I would get a radius error” - what is your Radius value set to in DJI App?

Hi Zane, thanks for the quick reply!
Reading back on what I wrote in the morning, I realize it was a bit hastily written.
I've been having 4 or more seperate issues.
One issue would be having the application lose connection with the drone entirely. I would still have control of the drone with the controller, so I would land, reconnect and restart the flight.
Another error was getting a radius error after I uploaded and tried starting the flight. It would give me an error message saying that the flight is outside the acceptable radius. Something that was easily fixed by restarting the application.
Another problem was flying at 2m/s under and overcast sky, or in the shadow of a mountain. I've never been reduced to 2m/s. But I understand this prevents motion blur. But like I said. It's not normally THAT slow.
The main issue was when the application was searching for aircraft. After turning on the drone and controller, and going into the application and trying to connect to the drone, I would get an error saying 'no connection detected'. On the other, newer tablet, I recieved the error message 'When connecting a DJI drone for the first time, use an internet connection (something along those lines.
I kept restarting the app, tablet drone and controller in different sequences to try to get the application to connect to the drone. Sometimes, randomly, it would connect. But most of the time, I wouldn't get a connection and would mess around for a hours trying to fly the area.
I was trying with an older iPad Pro 9.7inch. iPad OS version 16.7.1
The other one is iPad Pro, iPad OS version 16.6.1 (seemed newer, but maybe not)
The Map Pilot Pro I have is 5.5.6 build 092220231
If you send me your email, I'll send you my account email.

The application on the newer iPad was a fresh install, but worked with the drone for a few flights and then gave me errors, and then would work again...
With my original iPad, I've been flying with it for years and never had this issue.
I honestly can't afford to have that happen in the field. I drive about 2 hours to get to the area, it's not easy to go back into service to try and fix the issue...
The disconnect from the drone, just after takeoff, would happen randomly, but has happened a few times.
There WAS a radius set to the app. But I turned it off for both tablets.

Last thing, I also have a Samsung S22Ultra. I noticed that Map Pilot Pro is available for Android now. I tried using it, but it wouldn't connect/work either.

Thanks again for the help!
Phil

Please break this up into different tickets/threads. This is too much to do on one big blast here.

Are you verifying that the DJI app is working and then FULLY closing it before trying to connect with Map Pilot Pro? Make sure your cable is in good shape too and doesn't have any black pads on the connector.

In general you need to take screenshots when things happen so we can see what you are seeing. Otherwise there is a lot of guessing going on.

The support email address is mapping@dronesmadeeasy.com as is noted on every page on the site.

Yes. I checked the DJI Go app to see.if I am still able to connect to the drone. And it connect right away.
I always make sure that Map Pilot is the only app open.
As long as I can fix the main issue, which is not being able to connect to the drone, then I can figure out the other problems myself.

Like I said, the app is searching for aircraft, and then fails to connect. Which gives me an error message saying that I need an Internet connection.
I'm using two different iPads, S22 Ultra (android) three different cords, and still having the same problem. I only had this happen once before, and I was able to quickly get to a WiFi connection and resolve issue.

I'll try and get some screenshots of the issue when I can.
