Full 3D vs 2.5D Processing

Jay -

This option is designed for modeling of structures and care must be taken to collect proper overlap. This option is not designed for use over large areas or areas with lots of trees. Trees and vegetation will frequently get dropped from the output and show up as holes in the model.

When uploading a job to Maps Made Easy, there are a few options on the Point Use tab that will affect how your job is processed. They are on the point use tab because some of them affect the amount of points that will be required to do the processing.

One of these options is titled "Full 3D". Checking this box at the time of upload will tell our system to render the vertical and overhung surfaces. To properly render those kinds of surfaces, images that contain detail of those overhung and vertical areas will need to be uploaded. Read here for more detail: Overlap on Overhung Areas

This option will requires 50% more points because it takes 4 times the system resources to handle the added complexity. It is currently limited to 4 gigapixels worth of images.

Keep in mind that the 3D model previews below are the embeddable low quality preview models. The are simplified for quick download and consist of only 10,000 faces. The real models which are downloadable from the Map Detail page frequently have 10 million faces so the quality is MUCH better.

Turn the model sideways to see the differences.

Standard Processing - 2.5D

You can see the difference between the overhung corner of the structure. The 2.5D model is what we generate to do the orthophoto since it is being drawn from directly above (that is the ortho- part) and it has no information about overhung areas.

The full 3D model has the undercut areas under the points of the main axis of the pavilion.
