I think it is to manage transparency, like RGBA with A being Alpha.

GeoTiff Bands - Why 4 Bands Generated?
Hey all,
I'm currently writing an ecology manuscript with imagery derived from DJI Phantom 4 flights and mosaicked with Maps Made Easy. As far as I understand, the JPEG images I uploaded are 3 band (RGB); however, the GeoTiff that is downloaded from Maps Made Easy is 4 band and needs to be reduced back to a 3 band raster before I can conduct any further analyses in ArcMap. Why is a 4 band GeoTiff generated in the first place? Is this always the case? Is the 4 band automatically generated in case the user utilizes a camera with a near-infrared (NIR) band? Thank you.
Regards,
Wes Anderson

Thanks, Zane. That makes sense. Does anybody have anything to add or is anybody able to confirm this?
Zane - Looking at other posts, I'm led to believe you're affiliated with Drones Made Easy. Is that the case? If so, my follow-up post wasn't to second guess you at all. I just wanted to make sure the details were correct before sending this off to my coauthors. Thank you.
Yes, I do the support here.
