How to get best Image Quality

Hey Guys,

have a couple of questions here. I have been working with a team on projects for surveying and volumetrics. We use a DJI Inspire with Maps Made Easy in conjunction with Pix4D and other processing software. I was hoping I could get some help with the following questions:

  1. Could I please get some advice in finding the optimal settings with regards to finding the tipping point for speed, exposure settings etc. where we can get the best quality pictures that would allow for quality georeferenced modeling but also save us the most time and avoid battery changes?
  2. I was wondering what is the best way to QA the pictures in the field so we avoid visiting the site multiple times?
  3. We have found that the edges of the perimeter do not offer the same overlap as the center of the map, where edges can have as few as 2 images for each location, while the center has 5+. I was wondering if I could increase the overlap on the edges besides just expanding the polygon that surrounds the project site.
  4. Finally, I was wondering if there were any suggestions in terms of a tipping point for quality of pictures & time required to take the pictures, like would an 80% overlap provide significant quality outputs with only an incremental time increase vs. a 70% overlap?

Greatly appreciate your help! Thanks!

1. The app tries to help you manage this since there are so many variables that affect it. Always try to map at the brightest part of the day to keep the lighting related issues out of the equation. The next version of the app will make it easier to find the sweet spot.

2. We use the standard Mac Preview app and just fire through them to give them a quick look. Smear is bad. If you notice the images start to get dark you might want to fully open it to check it out in more detail.

3. The edges will always have less overlap. Even if you do a "victory lap" you will still have areas with less overlap. With Maps Made Easy we automatically trim around the flight envelope to get rid of the areas that had less overlap that were likely low quality.

4. 80% is what we recommend when you really need it to turn our perfectly the first time. You can get away with 70% or less but then you start risking having to take the data again. It is usually trees, water or terrain related issues that are the main causes of having to revisit.

As of today version 2.1.0 is available with the Terrain Awareness feature. This feature keeps the aircraft a uniform distance from the ground to keep the GSD and overlap consistent. It enables high quality mapping of areas that are not flat.
